What Inspires Adventure Travel - And Determines Destinations?
Posted by: Dan in Travel Ideas, Travel Talk->
Other than business, why do people travel to other countries? Or, better yet, why would you make the effort for international travel? While I would welcome overseas travel for business (I tried enough times!), I prefer to travel to destinations of my choice, and on my schedule. But why would you or I want to go so far, and to strange (unknown to us) places? For me, it goes way back to childhood. I read a lot (rather voraciously, actually), and since we didn’t have TV, my imagination became well-developed. The few movies I saw back then are (mostly) barely memorable, but the imagery gathered from reading books is still rather vivid. And the adventures in so many tales created a burning desire to visit and see those same places, and experience those same adventures. Even though some tales were fiction (OK, most of them – ha-ha!), the places were real; and even if they weren’t, I just knew they had to exist somewhere.
In a previous post I wrote of reading about travels to old Djakarta. Of course, there were also the jungles of Borneo, Rangoon in Burma, Singapore, Kowloon in Hong Kong, and more; there were the Alps, Himalayas, and the Andes. And who hasn’t read a tale and/or watched a movie about Tarzan - in “deepest, darkest Africa”? Of course, over the years, I eventually saw many other movies, as well. Any Indiana Jones, James Bond, or other ‘exotic locale’ movies stoke the imagination for the adventures to be had there. What about Casablanca or Jewel of the Nile or African Queen (Hey Bogie!…), The Eiger Sanction, or Gorky Park? Depending on your sense of adventure, these foster the notion that somewhere else is more fun, or holds more promise for excitement; a variation of the “greener pastures” idea – on a scale more grand.
So, where would you go to experience that adventure that’s been “on hold”? What kind of adventure would it be? Do you want to test your bravado by outrunning the bulls at the Fiesta of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain? Do you want to put your physical limits to the test by snowboarding down the steepest slopes of the highest peaks in the Andes? Or maybe your adventure is the romantic kind – spiriting that “special someone” away to an exotic “heaven on earth” place, to fill the senses. Or are you one whose adventure might consist of finding that special person once you are in that exotic location? (Ah, romance!)
I will explore as many of these as you would like in future posts and articles. Yes, travel and adventure go hand in hand, and a little intrigue from traveling to another country to find and experience that adventure fills out this passion I have.
